How To Prepare For Your Online Breathwork Session

With online breathwork sessions becoming increasingly popular, it's essential to know how to prepare. These tips will help you create a calm and focused environment, allowing you to get the most out of your experience.

Breathwork is a powerful practice for managing stress, fatigue and burnout. It involves intentional breathing patterns that can lead you to a meditative state and help you feel more relaxed and energized. It's an experience of self-discovery, reflection and deep connection with your true self.

Preparation is key to being better able to relax, let go, and breathe deeply. Here are 9 tips to help you:

1. Find a quiet, comfortable and private space

This could be a spare bedroom, home office, or even your living room. Having a dedicated space for your breathwork session where you won't be disturbed or interrupted can help foster a deeper sense of engagement and mindfulness.

2. Set the mood

Create a calm and soothing atmosphere by lighting candles, burning incense, sage or palo santo, or playing soft music. Consider using essential oils or diffusers to promote relaxation and create a peaceful environment where the mind can be at ease.

3. Test your technology

Make sure your computer, tablet, or phone is working properly and connected to the internet. Test the audio and video settings to ensure you can hear and see the facilitator clearly.

4. Dress comfortably

Wear clothes that allows you to move freely and breathe fully. Avoid tight-fitting clothes that restrict your movement or make you feel uncomfortable. Loose, breathable clothing like sweatpants, t-shirts, and yoga pants are ideal.

5. Hydrate

Drink plenty of water throughout the day leading up to your session, and avoid alcohol or excessive amounts of caffeine that may dehydrate you. You might consider having a water bottle nearby during your session to stay hydrated.

6. Eat lightly

It's best to avoid heavy meals or foods that could cause discomfort during your session. Consider a light snack, like a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts, a few hours before your practice, and avoid caffeine or other stimulants that could interfere with your ability to relax.

7. Use props & bring tissues if desired

Props like pillows and blankets can help you sit comfortably while supporting your body.

If you plan to be on the floor, sit on the edge of a pillow. This will raise your hips, ground the knees and help lengthen the spine. It's also best to have a blanket near, in case you get cold. Use props as needed to find a comfortable position, and adjust them throughout.

During breathwork, many people have experienced an emotional release in the form of crying, laughing and/or yawning - so it's best to have tissues near. It's quite common and there's nothing to fear. With a relaxed attitude, you have the opportunity to lean in to your emotions and discover more about your true nature. This is where healing and transformation begins.

8. Minimize distractions like noise, bright lights, and clutter.

If your space is cluttered, your mind will be too. Turn off notifications and give yourself this moment of calm and peace - you deserve it. Feel free to use headphones to block out your external environment, tuning in to your breath so you can experience its many benefits.

9. Set an intention

Think about what you want to get out of your breathwork session. What qualities do you seek? What do you want to let go of? Setting an intention can help center and focus your mind, as well as deepen your experience.
